The Soundcity MVP Award was held on December 29 but it’s all everyone
is still talking about. Tekno and Wizkid won three awards each and you
can check out the full list of winners here.
I haven’t watched Adekunle Gold perform a lot of times so I don’t
know if last night’s wonderful performance was a one-off or his regular
standard. Deciding to perform with a live band was a great choice and he
totally killed it, the best performance of the night by a country mile.
Wizkid capped his amazing year by winning three awards on the night. Despite his rather average performance of ‘Daddy yo’, he hasn’t done badly for a guy who’s had just two singles in 2016.
Tekno also won three awards himself but on the basis of his very forgettable performance should probably have been docked an award or two. Nonetheless, its well deserved recognition for an artist who has turned all his singles into gold this year.
Falz and Simi must have had the same thing for lunch on Thursday since they went on to serve bleh-ness in varying degrees. Falz’s performance was as insipid as it gets while Simi never really owned the stage when she performed.
Apart from needing to meet his dealer (for purely scientific purposes I promise), homeboy came on stage just to scream ‘yo, yo’ while his hypeman/backup singer sang as ‘off-key’ as is humanly possible.
THE GOOD
The Soundcity MVP awards boasted better visuals than the Headies and didn’t start several hours behind schedule either. The live stream was pretty easy on the eye and on the whole, the organization of the event could hardly be faulted on that front.Wizkid capped his amazing year by winning three awards on the night. THE BLEHHHH
I remember a time when Basketmouth used to be funny but those days seem to be long gone. While he did a competent job as the event host, on the whole, it was nothing spectacular.Falz and Simi must have had the same thing for lunch on Thursday since they went on to serve bleh-ness in varying degrees. THE UGLY
Someone has to ask so we’ll just get on with it, WHAT WAS TEKNO ON LAST NIGHT????Apart from needing to meet his dealer (for purely scientific purposes I promise), homeboy came on stage just to scream ‘yo, yo’ while his hypeman/backup singer sang as ‘off-key’ as is humanly possible.
